Teaching A Child To Read Resources

Teaching A Child To Read Resources

One of my greatest fears is that I will not be able to teach my five year old how to read fluently. She isn’t interested in the process at all. She has so much other things she would rather be doing than remembering letters and sounds. The world is moving too quickly around her and she doesn’t want to miss a beat. My goal as her teacher/mother is to make her want to learn by making the process more fun. I will also work to incorporate more examples of how much I enjoy reading.

Here are a few resources I have compiled to help with the process.

For Parent:

Reading Rockets – This site is a great place to go to for information on the process of teaching reading. They have alot of different resources available and things for you to read.

Get Ready To Read

Sight Words – For all your sight word needs there is now a .com full of resources.

This Reading Mama – Several literacy printables for you to download.

The Oxford Owl – Still exploring this site but they have several resources and ideas to help you.

Owl And Mouse – This one has several ideas for helping kids read as well as many things for older kids!

ABC Fast Phonics – A quick guide to the rules of phonics.

BBC – School resources full of games and ideas.

For Child:

Reading Bear – I just found this site and am thoroughly impressed. It helps children learn sounds and blends. Great resource to add to your list.

WatchKnowLearn.org – A lot of educational videos in a very organized layout.

Starfall – No early childhood list could be complete without this site. For years this site has been helping kids learn to read!

Teach Your Monster To Read – Another site I came across quite recently. I have a feeling we will be hearing more about this one soon. Looks really nice.

Mr. Nussbaum – This is a great site for all ages. My older kids like to browse the different games they have.

Fun Brain – More fun games!

There are tons other ideas and resources out there. We also have several free printables and work pages right here on the blog to help teach them to read. The trick is to get them interested and make them want to learn. Reading can be so much fun!
