What kind of Bedtime Staller is your kids? Netflix Stream Team 5 Minute Favorites
As part of my membership in the Netflix Stream Team, I write monthly about Netflix. All opinions are my own.
Recently Netflix asked us what kind of staller our kids are at bedtime. Are they a master negotiator, trickster, or slow as a snail? Nope, my kids aren’t stalling, they are trying to defy the laws of sleep through all out refusal to par take in the activity all together. Bedtime is like a suggestion to them. It could happen and then again we could win a million dollars or I could finally get all my blog work caught up… same chances of any of them happening.
Bedtime around here begins with the official announcement which follows bath and clean up time, followed by a good tucking in (apparently not good enough because they can still get up), stories and special time for each kid, and a little tech time while the other kids are being tucked. Than it begins to go from fun family time to our other nightly ritual, one kid gets hungry to the point of malnutrition, one kid has been scouting the desert in their pre-dreams and without water will fade into oblivion, and one kid just will not stay put under the covers and sometimes their own clothes. After the first go around is sorted and they are back in the bed with their clothes on…the first kid has a dilemma that they have to pee…but they don’t have to pee even though they are clearly doing the pee pee dance (JUST GO TO THE BATHROOM ALREADY. The potty doesn’t bite…or at least it hasn’t yet.) We also have a impromptu showing of the Singing Giraffe done in shadow puppetry.
We are way past the “five more minutes” tactics and into the “I’m outnumbered, exhausted, and crashing from my 6 cups of coffee earlier, so as long as you let me close my eyes and promise not to play with sharp objects you can do what you want” tactic….eventually they will pass out. That is one of the joys of home schooling and a mother that works mornings, they don’t have to get up early. In fact, sleeping later in the morning means more “Mommy time” later in the day into the night.
It works for us. I get all the kid time I want without the guilt of leaving them all morning while I go to work… yep, all the kid time I want…and more. I’m there while they are awake to force them to learn things like division and who Squanto was and what he did, which is kind of like my pay back for the fact that I only fit in about four hours of sleep the night before. It also means I’m there while they are awake to ask me 500 questions about stuff I have to Google because I don’t know why police are referred to as Five 0 or what part of the chicken is a nugget. Yet, even though I’m there for the sibling rivalry, the hair pulling moments, and the bedtime crazies, I’m also here for the snuggles, “I Love You, Momma”, and all those special moments that make parenting all worthwhile, at least the ones I will remember through the haze of exhaustion.
For those of you who have children that aren’t allergic to their eyelids, Netflix has come up with 5 minute favorites. When your kids are asking for five more minutes or one more show. You can give in knowing that in five minutes your sweet little angels will be settled down and far away in dream land. No longer will they be discussing why they think baby bear is the victim of heinous crimes the go unpunished or their motivation behind their latest performance as the character “dog”. They will be sleeping peacefully while you find your way to slumber land as well. No more squat competitions or play dough fights till tomorrow. Check out Netflix’s 5 minute Favorites and enjoy your night of grown up tv like Psych or Once Upon a Time after the kids finally go to sleep. Feel free to email me and describe this time in detail so I can live vicariously through the lives of strangers.
