Sensory Play – Textures

New folder (4)5

One of Lou’s favorite activities is making a massive mess. The bigger the mess the more fun that is to be had. Which is why playing with mushy, slimy, powder, or other messy substances is like Christmas all over again for her. What she doesn’t know is that while she is giving mommy the workout she so desperatly needs, she is also putting those little toddler senses into overload. The feel, the smell, and usually if we aren’t fast enough, the taste.

This clear plastic box is our messy sensory box. For all those messy activities, it’s easy to contain them into this cute little plastic box. It’s actually a scrapbook case I picked up at Michaels.

One of her favorite textures is slime. Slime is fun to make but we bought this yucky gunk at the dollar store for a stocking stuffer.  I’m not a fan of the slime feel but the kids love it.

Homemade Moldable powder – I’m sure most of you have heard of this neat trick. Flour and Baby oil is all you need. 4 part flour to 1 part baby oil and you get this powdery substance that molds but is super fun to play with.

Then there is the Kinetic Sand. It has more of a rough texture even though it behaves in many similar ways. It is moldable and can be smashed but the whole feel is completely different.

For good measure the kids through in some cotton balls and did something they called the Great Cotton Ball Challenge. It is much harder than you think to put cotton balls with a spoon into a bowl on top of you head while you are blindfolded. It is also quite fun.

  1. How fun!!! I noticed that my little 16 month old is starting to show major preferences for certain textures.. for instance, she HATES sand! lol.. it’s kind of funny to watch! This looks like it would be a fun homeschool project!

Anyhoo, I found your blog through a fellow blogger, and just thought I would stop by and say hi! It would totally make my day if you did the same… or better yet, keep in touch!! <3 – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com
